On May 15 -16, 2025, the EMERGE Language Forum officially launched its activities, marking a major milestone in the development of a Plurilingual Language Policy (PLP).  The event took place at a two-day hybrid seminar hosted by Sorbonne Nouvelle University. The seminar brought together linguists, language policy experts, and educators to begin the co-design process of alliance comprehensive and inclusive language strategy.

The Forum serves as an advisory board on language use across the EMERGE Alliance. Its mandate is to create a forward-thinking PLP that not only reflects the multilingual diversity of EMERGE institutions but also promotes inclusive, equitable, and sustainable communication and education practices.

The finalisation of the policy document is expected to take place during a follow-up seminar hosted by Neapolis University Paphos in October 2025. A complete draft of the PLP will be submitted to the Governing Board by April 2026.

A Comprehensive Approach to Multilingual Strategy

The EMERGE Plurilingual Language Policy will offer strategic recommendations across five key areas:

  • Governance
  • Communication Practices
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Research Practices
  • Community Engagement

To ensure a robust and impactful policy, four dedicated working groups have been established. These groups will focus on their respective domains while collaborating to maintain coherence and alignment across the policy framework. In addition, a mechanism for ongoing monitoring and evaluation will be embedded into the final policy to ensure its long-term effectiveness.
